Perfect sleeping posture

16th October 2015

Slumber Centre

It is World Spine Day on Friday 16th October 2015, and here at Harrison, we understand the importance of protecting your back through perfect sleeping posture.

Whether you are prone to back pain or not, it is essential that you consider the support your mattress gives you. Whilst we are often told about the importance of standing posture and have been warned about hunching over our computers all day, not as much thought is given to your posture as you sleep. However, as each person spends around a third of their life in bed, poor sleeping posture often leads to serious back and neck damage, and a reduction in sleep quality.

Making sure your spine is perfectly aligned is key to relieving pressure points and getting a restful night’s sleep. When your spine is in a neutral position, it means that the heavier parts of your body such as the hips, knees and shoulders are correctly supported. If your mattress is too soft, your spine bows downwards, creating pressure around your lower back and hips.

So does this mean the firmer the mattress the better?

There is often the misconception that a firm mattress is the best mattress for bad backs, but this is not necessarily the case. If your mattress is too firm, your spine will arc upwards and create pressure around the shoulders, hips and knees. Your perfect mattress will have enough ‘give’ in it to ensure your spine is not curve upwards, whilst still keeping the body fully supported. Our Revolution spring system allows the mattress to tailor itself to your body and will make sure that the heaviest parts of your body receive exactly the right level of support.

We believe that achieving perfect sleeping posture is essential to a good night’s sleep, but we know that no two spines are the same. This is why all Harrison mattresses are available in three tensions; choose from gently supportive, medium support and firm support. We are even able to tailor each side of the same mattress to different levels of firmness if you and your partner have different requirements.
