Caring for your new mattress

Mattress protection

We highly recommend using anunder blanket or good qualitycotton or wool-faced mattressprotector. It’s a good idea to airthe mattress regularly too, byleaving duvets folded back for afew hours each day. A waterproof protector may beused but will reduce the benefitsof sleeping on a natural mattresssurface and may lead to damagethrough condensation.

Cleaning

Remove dust and u from yourmattress every few months using a soft brush. Never use a vacuumcleaner, even if you have a specificmattress attachment, as this candisplace the natural fillings. Anyspillages should be absorbed usinga dry cloth or paper towels. If youneed to sponge the mattress, use adamp cloth and a very mild solutionof soap and water.

Supportive base

If you are using your new mattresson your own bed, it’s important that the base is in good condition. The mattress will contour to it, justas it does with your body, so werecommend replacing an old base.If the base is damaged in any way, it could be detrimental to yourmattress. If your mattress is beingplaced on a slatted base, ensure thegaps are no more than 75mm apart. If they are, you should considerusing a baseboard or under mattress– your retailer can o er furtheradvice.

Body impressions

Expect impressions

As most people sleep in the same position every night, bodyimpressions are a normal featureof handmade mattresses. You may find fillings settle or dip in the areawhere you sleep which can leave aridge in the centre of the mattress.Just like the impressions that formon the insole of leather shoes, thisis simply your mattress “getting toknow you”.

Reducing impressions

We recommend following ourrotating and turning instructionsto minimise body impressions. Please note: our mattresses areextremely heavy. If you are unableto rotate and turn your mattress,do not worry, this will not a affectthe performance of your mattressor guarantee. With continued use, fillings will settle of their ownaccord, however this will take aconsiderably longer length of time.

Rotating or turning?

Check the label on the surface ofyour mattress for the followingwording to determine which typeof mattress you will be caring for:

  • Non-turn/rotate only/singlesleeping surface/pillow topmattress
  • Turnable/turn with the seasons/dual sleeping surface mattress

Our non-turn mattresses can also be identified by the use of a non-sleeping surface sticker on the underside.

If your mattress is turnable or seasonal turn you may wish to turn and rotate your mattress regularly during the first fewmonths and about twice a year thereafter. A good way to remember to turn your mattress is when the clocks change inthe spring and autumn.
